I have been hearing a lot people mentioning one word resolutions. Instead of setting lofty or multiple goals, they are choosing just one word. One word you can focus on every day, all year long...One word that sums up who you want to be or how you want to live.
For me, this is not a new concept. Actually, I first did this back in my teenage years, and continued to do so in my college years. When I was a teen, I started with "optimistic". I wanted to be more optimistic, to find the positive side of things when I felt down or when life around me seemed uncertain. In college, I chose "outgoing". I am naturally an introvert, and knew that for me to grow, I needed to learn how to put myself outside my comfort zone and to speak up and try new things more often. I constantly put myself in more social settings and took on leadership roles that I would have normally shied away from in the past. The last two years I have used the same one word; Stretch. It has encouraged me to start every morning doing some simple stretches to wake my body up, increase my blood flow, decrease tight or sore muscles, and more importantly, help gain back some flexibility and mobility due to some old injuries.
If you find that making and keeping a New Year’s resolution difficult, try giving the one word concept a whirl. It's simple. Pick one word that you want to focus on throughout the year. Write it down. Display it where you will see it every day...on your mirror, fridge, on your cars dashboard, on your computer, or even on your cell phone. Have it be visible as a constant reminder. Then incorporate it into your daily life.
It will take intention and commitment, but if you let it, your one word will shape not only your year, but you as well. It will become the compass that directs your decisions and guides your steps.
